Alex Sayer “Selenophile”
Meet The Artist, Alex Sayer
Alex has been a practicing artist for ten years. After relocating to the area with her family, she sought out a creative practice to expand her personhood outside of the identity of “mother”. Alex creates to develop connection with community and as a way to transmute the pain and discomfort of living in a world where hyper-individualism is sold and delivered next-day while every heartbreak from the whole world is streamed and available immediately in our pocket.
Her technique, intentionally loose and uncontrolled, allows for natural organic textures and patterns to coalesce into imagined, yet familiar natural scenery and dreamscapes. Alex creates work with a variety of water-based mediums, her favorite being acrylic for its ability to be watered down and layered. She is inspired by the symbolism and spirituality that ebbs and flows throughout nature.
Her work aims to relax the viewer while igniting a curiosity and wonder for creative expression that modern existence aims to suppress. She hopes her work will guide the viewer to explore their own wild unknown and recognize that creativity is a necessary tool available for everyone.

Artist Statement: Art Is Happiness
Selenophile means “one who adores the moon”. Slowing down is a difficult tas in these times, and following along with the moons cycles has allowed me to creep into my own natural, steady rhythm. Before this perspective shift, I was left rushing to fill obligations I didn't care for, and doubtful of my abilities to create a life I loved. This new relationship with "time" creates space to alchemize my emotional raw material into physical works of art. The moon reflects back my ability to remain steadfast through all the phases of my life.
I created this body of work as a ritual to express gratitude to the moon. This series is mostly created with acrylic paint. Experimenting throughout 2024 brought new ideas and techniques that have crystallized into this series. Included in these experiments is eco-printing with corn on the cob which creates a beautiful organic texture and is the basis for most of the first layers. The intentional use of plants as tools in my process brings my relationship with nature into my work.
